Let’s talk about how you talk to yourself. I’m assuming you’ve heard the concept of “affirmations” before, but if not, quick lesson before we begin: the all-knowing Wikipedia defines Affirmations as: “terminology [that] refer[s] primarily to the practice of positive thinking and self-empowerment - fostering a belief that ‘a positive mental attitude supported by affirmations will achieve success in anything.”
In a nutshell, we are what we think and by forcing ourselves to think specifically positive thoughts we can control our destinies.
Woah… that’s a deep, bro.
True… however there IS research backing this concept and how effective it is on mentality. In fact, nowadays most self-help books make reference to the power of affirmations and if you’ve ever read any blurbs about “habits of highly successful people,” basically ALL of them incorporate this small task into their day. Plus, it’s EASY. All you have to do is read a sentence over and over again until it feels true, then move on to the next one. If that feels a little too open-ended for my structure-seeking personality types, try giving it ten times each and see where that gets you.
Not sure where to start? I gotchu girl, here are a couple of my favorites, courtesy of the HuffPost, 35 Affirmations That Will Change Your Life:
1. Today, I am energetic and overflowing with joy.
2. Creative energy surges through me and leads me to new and brilliant ideas.
3. I am courageous and I stand up for myself.
4. My thoughts are filled with positivity and my life is plentiful with prosperity.
5. Today, I abandon my old habits and take up new, more positive ones.
6. I acknowledge my own self-worth; my confidence is soaring
7. My efforts are being supported by the universe; my dreams manifest into reality before my eyes.
8. I radiate beauty, charm, and grace.
9. I wake up today with strength in my heart and clarity in my mind.
10. My life is just beginning
We live in a digital age, so there are really no excuses here with apps out the wazoo, equipped with affirmations that you don’t even have to think up yourself. Besides, practice makes perfect, even in this case. The more you do it, the more specific your affirmations will become. Don’t worry about getting it right the first go around either, find a couple online or in an app that make you feel something when you read them, throw ‘em into the notes on your phone and read while brushing your teeth, drinking your coffee, taking a shower, sweating on the elliptical… whatever floats your boat, sister!
So now that I have totally sold you on this concept of affirmations, I’m going to flip it on its’ head and take it one. step. further. [*Insert Q Snap Here*] I don’t know if it’s just me, or if others also have the attention span of a gnat and when asked to repeat the same thing 10+ times in a row, into the silent abyss of nothingness around them, they get a liiiiiitle bored. Hello, guilty as charged.
I KNOW that these work and I know that I can’t possibly hope to inspire a single soul if I don’t walk the walk. So I got to thinking... what could I do that would keep me engaged in my affirmations, give me a confidence boost, AND put me in a boss state of mind?
Spoiler alert: I created an affirmations PLAYLIST.
I added a few songs that really light my soul on fire and listen every day while doing my cardio and speaking my affirmations. [I know, I sometimes take multi-tasking to absurd levels] Music has always been a means to check in with myself emotionally, plus it’s the quickest way to shift my vibe to one that’s perfect for bringing in all that positive energy, so I adapted the method!
I like to look at it as reinforcement. The girl-power music gets me FEELING like Queen B. I’m speaking the words to myself that make me THINK like Queen B. I’m workin’ on my fitness to have the BODY like Queen B. It’s an electric experience… catch my drift?
Now don’t get it twisted, I do NOT think affirmations are boring and running through them while waiting on the coffee to brew certainly works for some people. My point is, you don’t need to do things exactly by the book in order to achieve the same results. Figure out what works for you and embrace the sh** out of it! Sometimes it takes a little self-mindset-manipulation to get to where we need to be; Queen B, Ariana G and obviously, the ever fab Lizzo just so happen to do it for me ;)
Remember, we are what we continually hear, so take control and start your day with some feel-good-vibes. Your career will thank you, your wallet will thank you, your body will thank you, and YOU will thank you.
